Business Development Manager, Global Projects
As part of the Client Relations Department’s Business Development team, this position is responsible for providing marketing and business development advice and support to the Global Projects Department leadership and practices, as well as the Firm’s Energy Sector initiative. This exempt, firmwide position focuses on planning and managing projects that align with the strategic business development goals of this department, in addition to relevant practice groups and industry groups.

As part of the Client Relations Department’s Business Development team, this position is responsible for providing marketing and business development advice and support to the Global Projects Department leadership and practices, as well as the Firm’s Energy Sector initiative. This exempt, firmwide position focuses on planning and managing projects that align with the strategic business development goals of this department, in addition to relevant practice groups and industry groups. This position reports to the Director, Business Development; dotted line to Chair, Global Projects Department and can be resident in our Houston or Washington D.C. location.

 Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Partner with department co-chairs in the development of the annual strategic plan, and execute projects and programs in support of same.
  • Collaborate with department leadership and partners in the development and execution of individual business plans. 
  • Provide regular updates on client/practice performance to leadership. 
  • Primary support of the Energy Sector initiative, a cross-practice industry-specific partner group focused on strategy, cross-selling, events and client and prospect targeting initiatives. 
  • Lead the development and coordination of new business proposals, PowerPoint presentations and RFP responses for the practices; track success ratio of same. 
  • Collaborate with the Pricing and Practice Management Department on competitive pricing structures for new and existing clients. 
  • Develop and maintain positioning statements, compelling themes, value propositions, and other key messaging/communication points that drive awareness/recognition and enhance quality and brand perception of Global Projects lawyers, practices and experience. 
  • Supervise the capture, recording and maintenance of experience related to the department's practices and lawyers utilizing the Firm’s experience database and workflow protocol. 
  • Plan and manage industry conference sponsorships, client presentations and seminars, client dinners, and other events related to the promotion of the department and sector. 
  • Manage directory submissions for major awards and comprehensive survey response campaigns (e.g. Chambers). 
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to raise practice visibility though media opportunities. 
  • Develop and manage the annual department budget and take responsibility for monitoring operational expenditures and producing regular budget reports.
  • Coordinate with lawyers and others in Client Relations to develop and distribute legal updates sent to clients via electronic mail; maintain quality of distribution lists for the same. 
  • Develop and deliver firm, company, industry, economic, and other intelligence to Global Projects lawyers in support of business development initiatives. 
  • Manage dedicated coordinator and contribute to their coaching, mentoring and development in support of department initiatives. 
  • Other projects as assigned by Chief Marketing Office, Director of Business Development and/or Department Chairs.


Specific Requirements

Qualifications: 

  • Candidate should have 5+ years of marketing or related experience, preferably within a professional services environment and ideally within a large law firm. 
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degrees a plus.  
  • A solid understanding of marketing, business development and public relations principles and concepts, and should have a proven track record in developing solutions and achieving results.  
  • A strong understanding of energy industry concepts and language. 
  • Should possess solid business acumen and experience in researching and interpreting company data.
  • Able to work well with a variety levels within an organization and possess diplomacy, enthusiasm, perseverance and a sense of humor.  
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, and have strong skills in written/verbal communication, organizational ability, prioritization, and dealing with ambiguity.  
  • Strong skills in MS Office software, including PowerPoint; experience with InterAction a plus; knowledge of web-based legal and/or other database systems a plus.  
  • Flexibility to work additional hours and occasional travel are required.
